Jonathan, Jon as his friends call him, sat for his securities license exam two days before the market crash of 1987.  October 19, 1987, or Black Monday as it is called, saw in excess of a 22% decline in the Dow, the largest daily percentage loss in US market history.  Even the most seasoned investor was struck with fear.  But for Jon, it contained an important lesson that he has carried with him ever since.  Just as there is no assurance of success in investing, neither is there any guarantee against loss.  But there are things that an investor can do to aim towards their goals and mitigate losses.   A well-planned (see Advisory Process), diversified and carefully monitored portfolio is key. Add to that patience and perspective and an investor has a reasonable expectation of good results (see My Mission). It is the attention to detail and and proactive maintenance of assets that explains the long-term relationships that Jon has enjoyed since he entered the securities industry.
